Why it works
The L85A2 covers close-to-medium engagements at a level the M590A1 shotgun cannot match — running the assault rifle beats the shotgun the large majority of the time, so it is the default rather than a situational pick. Flash Hider is a universally strong barrel choice: it keeps the vertical climb manageable through a full magazine, which matters because Sledge often fires immediately after opening a surface rather than from a settled position. The Reaper MK2 runs the same Flash Hider for the same reason, with default sight since it doesn't need anything unusual (it has no grip slot at all). The laser attachment on both weapons tightens hip-fire accuracy for those fast, close-range trades.
Who it is best for
Players who want one dependable Sledge setup for every site: soft-breach a line with the sledgehammer, then hold or push through it with an assault rifle instead of a shotgun's shorter effective range. Frag Grenades pull double duty — they clear enemy utility (cameras, Claymores, deployable shields) the entry itself can't destroy, and they pair naturally with Sledge's vertical breaches: toss one through a freshly opened floor or wall before committing to the line.
One common mistake
Defaulting to the M590A1 out of habit. The L85A2's range and follow-up shot potential win far more engagements than the shotgun's one-tap potential costs you.
Situational alternatives

Consistent setup

Swap to Compensator if horizontal recoil is what actually throws your aim off during a spray — it tightens the horizontal drift Flash Hider does not address.
Tradeoff: The vertical climb Flash Hider controls comes back, so sustained fire pulls upward more than before. Only worth it if you already keep shots on target horizontally.
Utility-focused setup

Suppressor is worth running once the L85A2's recoil already feels easy to control — it trades a little recoil assistance for hiding your muzzle flash and gunshot direction from map pings.
Tradeoff: You lose some of Flash Hider's vertical recoil control, which matters more than the stealth benefit if you are not already comfortable holding the gun on target.
